Things to do in Kahului and Wailuku
Most visitors meet Maui here, at OGG airport, before driving on to a beach town.
Kahului is where you land, pick up a rental car, and stock up at the Queen Kaahumanu Center before heading to West or South Maui; Wailuku, its smaller neighbour, is the county seat and the gateway to Iao Valley State Monument, about 15 minutes inland.
There is no beach resort here and no reason to linger past a night: Kahului-to-Kihei runs about 30 minutes, Kahului-to-Lahaina about 45. Rental counters get busy right after the main afternoon arrivals from the mainland, so booking ahead matters more than choosing a company.
