Things to do in Maalaea
Maalaea is a small harbour on Maui's south coast, not a place to base a stay: there is no beach town here, just a marina, a shopping centre, and the Maui Ocean Center.
What matters is that this is the shortest run to Molokini, roughly 20 to 25 minutes by boat versus 45 minutes or more from Lahaina, which is why many snorkel and whale-watching operators sail from here rather than from Kihei or Wailea.
Wind picks up most afternoons, so morning departures (often 6 to 7 am) get calmer water and better visibility. Winter (December to April) also brings humpback whales through the channel just offshore. Parking at the harbour is limited and fills early on busy mornings.
